so it's not impossible that harry reid could get that up or down vote. i'll tell you, the way things stand now, if that was today, he would not get that vote. republicans would likely block that vote with a filibuster. but again, we just can't predict the future in this congress. and if there's no other deal, it's hard to say what lawmakers on either side would do when we come to january 1 or january 2. >> all right. while lawmakers are negotiating, i understand president obama is making the rounds? >> reporter: yeah. yes. his schedule actually is -- funny, he has no public events at all this weekend except for one. we know that he is planning to be on "meet the press." a very rare appearance for the president on a morning news show. but he's obviously picking his timing carefully and very poignantly. he want to put extra pressure on congress, and he's making an appearance tomorrow on nbc's "meet the press." >> lisa desjardins in washington, thanks. we'll be watching right along with you. >>> in india, the young woman gang raped on a new delhi bus is dea

now in case that deal breaks down, the president has asked democratic leader harry reid to prepare a separate bill to put on the senate floor. that bill would increase taxes for households that earn 250- thousand dollars or more. now that's a democratic proposal, and you can expect republicans would block it. so rather than thinking of that as a stop-gap measure, think of it as a political move to try to shift the responsibility of failure onto republicans just before the nation reaches the hour of reckoning. jessica yellin >> still ahead on kron 4 news at eight. a multi-million dollar lawsuit. on behalf of a six year old who survived the newtown school shooting. we meet the lawyer who is taking up the case. then. police put up sobriety check points just in time for the new year celebrations. we'll tell you where. plus. >> coming up the best and the worst in the next edition of people behaving badly. >>> police are cracking down on people drinking and getting behind the wheel this holiday weekend. to do so. several departments have set up d-u- i chekpoints throughout the bay area inc

gregg: what about harry reid? what's his, does he have anything at all maybe towards the end of the week he will put on the table? i've been hearing he will put to a vote an extension of the bush tax cuts for anybody making under $250,000 a year, extend unemployment benefits for some 2 million people that are about to lose them. what are you hearing? >> right. he sounded pretty pessimistic this morning but that could change and there's, kind of a fight, procedurally between the house and the senate in a sense that if reid originates a bill in the senate that would do what you said, people in the house say, well that would be unacceptable because the constitution requires revenue bills to originate in the house. but there is this bill that the house did pass a while back extending tax cuts for everybody. the senate could actually amend that bill. it originated in the house and then send it back and actually get somewhere. you have to remember that john boehner actually gave in on the principle of raising tax rates
